What do we do at the HUB?

Hey, welcome to the HUB! We are the grade 8-12 community of Granville Chapel. We always have new visitors at the HUB...come check it out and meet some people...we are a welcoming bunch. Look below to find out what's happening:

Bible Study
Wednesday nights from 7-9pm

At the HUB, we are committed to studying the Word of God together. A weekly bible study is one of the ways we do that. Bible Studies will happen every Wednesday night during the year beginning September 23rd. This is a fundamental element of our program.

As September approaches, plan ahead to make Bible Studies a priority for you on Wednesday nights.

We have boys and girls bible studies in different parts of the city. They are held in homes, and usually have no more than 8 people. For most of our HUB students, they are the thing they look forward to most.

We study books of the Bible in a way that challenges us to live as obedient disciples of Jesus. They are a powerful place of intimacy and accountability. Often the people in your Bible Study become your closest friends. We will have sign-ups beginning Sunday, September 13th in the Lounge after Community Hour. Locations of the studies will be announced then.

Youth Alpha
Wednesday Nights from 7-8:45pm

If you aren't in Bible Study, then make being at Youth Alpha your priority during the week!

This year we are running Youth Alpha during the fall semester. It's awesome! We explore life's big questions: a search for answers about life, reality and the Christian faith.

Youth Alpha is an eleven week introduction to Christianity and presents the basics of the Christian faith. It uses games and multimedia to illustrate the points each week. Throughout the course these elements will challenge you and your friends to think about the relevance of Jesus today.

Youth Alpha will kick-off the year with a huge party on Saturday, September 26th beginning at 6:30pm at Granville Chapel. The course will start the following week (September 30th) and will run Wednesday nights at Granville Chapel beginning at 7:00pm and will wrap up by 8:45pm. Each week will offer social time with great snacks, a presentation focused on a different topic of Christianity and life, and a time for reflection and discussion in small groups. You can check out the GC Youth Alpha website here for info about weekly topics, dates, and more!

This year, we are encouraging the following people to attend Youth Alpha: - our new grade 8's (you can begin Bible Study in January); - any first-timers from the HUB community; and - Youth Alpha grads (or any students) who bring a friend. You MAY NOT take the Youth Alpha course again if a friend does not come with you or you are not helping run Youth Alpha.

Also, if you've taken Youth Alpha and would like to be a leader, there are many spots available for service. Please email us ASAP to let us know if this is something you are interested in hearing more about.

Community Hour
1st, 2nd, 4th (& 5th) Sunday mornings from 10-11:30am

Every Sunday (except the third Sunday of the month) the HUB community meets at Granville Chapel for Community Hour.

We begin by arriving at Granville Chapel for church at 10am. Many of us sit together in the front, left-hand side of the church, and we'd love to have you join us! Then, after the worship team's first worship set, the HUB is dismissed to our Community Hour (located in the Lounge) where we continue our own worship service through singing, prayer, listening to a sermon and discussing it, taking communion, and tithing. This is a chance for us to come together to worship God and enjoy great fellowship with one another.

HUB Service Teams
The 3rd Sundays of the month from 10-11:30am

Every 3rd Sunday of the Month is "Youth Sunday," which means our community stays-in and helps run the main service at Granville Chapel.

We help lead worship, do sound, powerpoint, act as greeters/ushers, make tea and coffee, run the library, make announcements, read scripture, and lead the congregation in prayer. It is a fantastic way to serve the larger community at Granville Chapel, and for us to try out new ways of serving to discover what our passions are!

Beginning Sunday, September 13th, you will have the opportunity to sign-up to serve on a service team. Our entire community participates in this, so we encourage you to join us! It's a chance to grow in the gifts that God has given us as we serve the body of Christ.

HUB Hangouts
1st and 4th Friday nights from 7-9pm

Every first and fourth Friday night of the month our community gets together to experience fellowship. Fellowship is more than friendship. Friendship is tied to interest groups; fellowship is tied to Jesus. When we come together on Friday night we want to do two things: honor Jesus and have fun. This is a great opportunity to invite friends and see people who aren't in your Bible study or Alpha group during the week. These evenings may be structured or unstructured, always involve good food, and are an opportunity to hang out, eat, play, and share life together. We are always looking for families who would like to host a HUB Hangout in their home. Sign-ups for hosting will begin Sunday, September 13th after the church service.

HUB C.I.A. Night
Every 2nd Friday from 7-9pm

Every 2nd Friday of the month the HUB comes together to serve others: not because we have to, but because we believe that Jesus was primarily motivated by love and service, often at a cost. C.I.A. means Compassion-In-Action. We refuse to be consumer Christians who focus only on ourselves or our community. Although it's important for us to have great community and fellowship with one another, that's not all! Part of following Jesus means we join Him in where he's at: that means getting outside our comfort zones and putting others before ourselves. Our DNA as a community is summarized in our motto: "Service over self."

On these nights we serve at Gather and Give, make soup for the homeless on the Downtown Eastside, and do other service projects in and around our local community. We hope you'll join us on these nights, because you'll find that as you serve others, God meets and blesses you in new ways (just talk to anyone in the HUB who's served in any capacity, and they'll tell you!).

HUB Special Events

During the school year, we do a variety of things which only happen once or twice.

We will be having:
- A church retreat (Fall - more info on this in another email)
- A music concert (Winter) - Snowtubing (Winter) - Hiking trips (Spring). - A youth retreat (Spring)
- A missions trip (Summer)

As the year unfolds, you will hear more about these opportunities that you won't want to miss!

A word to our Grade 12s...

WOW Ya'll (as David Brooks would say). You are now at the top of your class. You are a leader for everyone under you. This is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility. You have already gotten an email from us, but let us remind you again how important your role is this year. If you decided to serve, you would be working with a great team:

People like:
Jonathan Jung
Alicia Coleman
Sydney Archer
Joe White
Heidi White
Matthew Kloeble
Leah Elderton
Brandon Jung
Lizzie Sayson

Email us if working with Youth Alpha, learning how to lead a Bible Study, planning a Friday Night Hangout, or helping out in Community Hour is something you feel would help you grow in your final year of high school.

A RECAP

We can't wait to see you in September!

OK...so a recap. As a participant in the HUB we gather together in three main ways during the week:

Wednesday night Bible Study or Youth Alpha; Friday night HUB hangouts/C.I.A.; and Sunday morning Community Hour. Many in our community do all three. If you can only come to one thing, we encourage you to make Wednesday night your HUB commitment (either Youth Alpha or Bible Study), because spending time in fellowship with others and digging deep into God's Word is what will help you grow in your faith the most.

We offer a warm welcome to you!
